Part of Courtland Avenue was expected to remain closed until Thursday morning due to a major water main break.

The break was reported around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, along near the Highway 7/8 ramps, and prompted police to shut down Courtland between the highway and Hayward Avenue.

It likely caused many Kitchener residents to experience low water pressure for much of the afternoon.

By the dinner hour, only a few businesses remained affected by the break.

Greater impacts were had on traffic, with drivers forced to detour around Courtland during the afternoon rush.

It was the third break to occur in Kitchener in a 24-hour period.

The first break occurred late Tuesday night on King Street, near Sydney Street.

Officials believe somebody crashed a vehicle into a water hydrant and left the scene .

Water was restored to the 20 or so units affected by 7 a.m. Wednesday, but crews continued to work on repairing the road through the day.

Around 9 a.m. Wednesday, a second break occurred on Strathcona Crescent, in the area of River Road and Lorraine Avenue.

Cold weather is believed to be to blame for a break in the six-inch main there, which affected about 25 properties.

Crews were still looking to find the break as of late morning, and expected to be on scene until well into the evening.
