A lockdown at the women’s prison in south Kitchener has now entered its fifth day.

According to Correctional Service Canada, the lockdown at the Grand Valley Institution for Women began March 3 around 2:40 p.m.

Few details were provided about what prompted the lockdown, but a CSC press release said that staff members were conducting an “exceptional search.”

“The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates,” the release reads.

“Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.”

No visits are allowed at the prison until the lockdown is lifted.

A spokesperson for CSC told CTV News on Monday that it was not clear how much longer the search would take.
