Canadian Ben Flanagan used a huge kick to win the 10,000 metres at the NCAA track and field championships on Wednesday, in his final race for the University of Michigan.

The fifth-year senior from Kitchener, who attended St. Mary’s High School, hunted down Alabama's Vincent Kiprop over the final 150 metres at Hayward Field to win gold in 28 minutes 34.53 seconds, beating Kiprop by .46 of a second.

Flanagan's time was a personal best by almost a minute.

Dillon Maggard of Utah State was third in 28:38.36.
