The first of two storm systems forecast for this weekend has made its way to southern Ontario.

Freezing rain started falling in Waterloo-Wellington and surrounding areas early Friday morning, but turned into rain as temperatures rose.

Temperatures fell back to the freezing mark late Friday afternoon, bringing with them more freezing rain and even some snow.

Environment Canada estimates that between 3 and 8 millimetres of freezing rain fell in the first wave alone.

As of 7 p.m. Friday, a freezing rain warning was in effect for Waterloo-Wellington, Huron Perth, Grey County and areas near Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Barrie, Orillia and Midland as of Friday evening.

By Saturday morning, Environment Canada says, a major freezing rain storm will be on its way across the border.

Beginning Saturday afternoon, between 20 and 30 mm of freezing rain is possible through until Sunday morning.

Environment Canada is warning of the potential for widespread power outages and downed trees.

For regions closer to Lake Erie, temperatures may remain above zero – in which case those areas could see between 15 and 25 mm of rain.
