Four cyclists were taken to hospital with minor injuries following a crash just outside Waterloo.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Kressler Road and Wellesley Township Road 5.

Police say the cyclists were biking as part of a group of 15 to 20 when they were passed by an SUV towing a horse trailer.

It’s not clear if the SUV and/or trailer hit the cyclists.

“We still have a lot of work to do in terms of … determining what exactly occurred,” says police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel.

All but one of the cyclists had been released from hospital by Thursday morning.

The cyclists were part of a Waterloo Cycling Club group biking the route to learn about road safety and the importance of maintaining a tight formation.

Club president Alain Francq says safety on the road is a joint responsibility.

“There has to be awareness on both sides,” he says.

“You have to be aware as a cyclist, you have to follow the rules of the road. Same for the drivers.”

The driver of the SUV was not injured.
