Sitting in a wheelchair and clad in an orange jumpsuit, Alistair Wood made a brief video appearance in Guelph court Tuesday morning.

Wood is the 83-year-old man accused of killing Kathleen Wood, his 84-year-old wife, last week.

The couple lived at a large, adults-only community in Guelph known as the Village by the Arboretum.

Police aren’t saying what led to Kathleen Wood being found dead inside their home, or the laying of the first-degree murder charge against her husband.

Gerry Meinzer, the president of the Village by the Arboretum’s residents’ association, says Kathleen Wood was “quite active” and “popular” around the community, known as someone who enjoyed  playing cards and knitting.

Alistair Wood wasn’t as well known, he said, but did deliver the community’s newspaper.

“Everybody says ‘Yeah, he had the beginnings of dementia,” Meinzer said.

The couple do not have any children. Two nieces were in attendance at Tuesday’s court appearance.

Wood, who is hard of hearing, was asked twice in court for his name.

During a previous court appearance, he seemed to have a difficult time hearing the judge.

Wood’s case returns to court Friday, with the 83-year-old again appearing via video link.
