One man is dead following a crash involving a small SUV and a transport truck in Haldimand County.
Wednesday evening, around 9:55, emergency crews were called to a crash on Highway 6 at the Caledonia Bypass.
OPP, Six Nations police and fire crews arrived on the scene to discover a small SUV had collided head-on with a tractor trailer tanker unit.
As a result of the impact the small SUV came to rest in the west ditch, while the tractor trailer tanker unit hauling a load of gasoline entered the east ditch where the tractor caught on fire.
The truck driver, 40-year-old Shawn Faist of Brantford, Ont. was able to escape before the fire consumed the cab.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control shortly after arriving and kept the fire from spreading to the tanker portion of the tractor trailer unit which was loaded with gasoline.
The SUV driver, 45-year-old James Merrilees of Norfolk County, suffered life-threatening injuries and was removed from his vehicle by OPP officers and Six Nations police.
Merrilees was transported to West Haldimand Hospital in Hagersville where he was pronounced deceased by the attending physician.
Faist suffered non-life threatening injuries and was also transported to hospital in Hagersville for treatment.
The truck's cab was destroyed by fire and the small SUV sustained severe damage.
