Waterloo Regional Police say in just one week, the public has responded and handed over a number of weapons, some illegal, in their month long firearms amnesty program.

So far police have been called to remove 39 firearms, four of which are prohibited handguns. They have also collected pellet guns, prohibited knives and several dozen boxes of ammunition.

Police say the initiative is an opportunity for community members to get rid of items that could be a safety risk.

WRPS call their offer an act of amnesty, although admit it stops short of outright immunity. The amnesty will primarily apply to possession, licensing and storage-type issues.

Should police get a firearm known to be involved in a very serious criminal offence that will require some additional inquiry.

Officials say if you are looking to hand in a firearm for destruction, you are asked to call and arrange for a pick up. They say under no circumstances are the items to be transported by the public.

Police will also accept calls to dispose of replica guns, pellet guns, prohibited knives and other weapons.

Anyone who uses the program will have to provide basic personal information and sign a waiver.
