OPP say they will be out on the roads this upcoming long weekend, looking for distracted drivers.
Forty-one deaths have been attributed to distracted driving on OPP-patrolled roads this year and police say the number of crashes caused by distracted drivers is up 20 per cent compared with this time last year.
Officers will be enforcing new legislation that carries tougher penalties for distracted driving.
As of Sept. 1, the new set fine for distracted driving is $490 and three demerit points.
In addition, so-called text stops have been set up to discourage distracted drivers.
The stop, an initiatives run by the OPP and Ministry of Transportation, includes locations in Cambridge, Woodstock, King City and Port Hope.
Police say they hope the text stops will keep drivers for reaching for their phones while they're on the road.
