The world’s largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment plans to establish a research lab in Waterloo as it expands its presence in Canada.

The Ontario government announced Tuesday that Huawei Canada, the Canadian arm of the Chinese tech giant, will spend $212 million to create 250 research and development jobs in Ontario.

The province will add $16 million to that total.

According to a government press release, Huawei’s expansion will focus on technology that allow faster internet speeds, as well as areas like cloud computing, data analytics and mobile security.

Huawei Canada already has a research facility in Ottawa, which will grow as part of Tuesday’s announcement, while new labs will be established in Waterloo and Markham.

“The province has a vibrant innovation ecosystem that we are proud to be a part of for the past six years,” Huawei Technologies deputy chair Ken Hu said in the release.

“Our Canadian research team is helping to drive pioneering projects around the world, and this accelerated investment in (Ontario) reflects our confidence in Ontario.”

It is not clear how many of the 250 jobs announced Tuesday will be based in Waterloo.
