Flags at Galt Collegiate Institute flew at half-staff Wednesday and again Thursday following the death of a 16-year-old student.

On Nov. 30, Nicholas Spencer crashed while skateboarding in Cambridge.

He fell off his board while on Grand Avenue South.

Exactly what happened isn’t clear, but police say they’re not investigating the incident.

An online fundraiser for Spencer’s family launched Sunday had already surpassed its $2,000 goal by Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Gofundme page, Spencer received severe head injuries in the crash.

He was placed in a medically-induced coma, from which he eventually awoke – but then things took a turn for the worse, and the teen needed brain surgery to remove half his skull.

Wednesday, as news of Spencer's death broke, a number of GCI students took to social media to express their sorrow.

“Sad day today, RIP Nicholas Spencer, you put up a good fight, rest easy,” tweeted @megokools.

Friends of Spencer say they plan to set up additional fundraisers in his memory, including a benefit concert.
