A date has been set for the Ontario byelections in Kitchener-Waterloo and Vaughan.
Voters will be going to the polls Thursday, September 6th.
Premier Dalton McGuinty called the byelections Wednesday to fill the two seats vacated by Liberal Greg Sorbara and Progressive Conservative Elizabeth Witmer.
Sorbara resigned last week, while Witmer resigned to head the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
McGuinty made the announcement Wednesday while touring a school in Maple, just north of Toronto. He says for him making sure there’s labour peace in schools is the key issue in the byelections.
If the Liberals win both byelections, the party could regain a majority government.
The byelections come as tensions between teachers and the province continue to escalate.
The premier has been urging unions to accept new contracts before the school year starts while some unions have already scheduled strike votes.
The province has only reached a deal with the English Catholic teachers.
