Brantford is the latest Ontario municipality to consider banning cigarette smoke from outdoor public property.

Spearheading the effort is Coun. Larry Kings, who says the idea came from residents who saw people smoking while pushing children on swings in a city park.

“They just didn’t feel that it was the right thing to do for the kids – it sends the wrong message,” he said.

Kings is proposing that the city ban smoking from city-controlled public places, with the exception of public housing units.

“We’re going to try to concentrate mainly … on the outdoor parks and playgrounds,” he said.

Councillors are expected to see a staff report on the issue in December.
