It’s been days since a meteorite was reportedly seen streaking through the skies over southern Ontario but some still haven’t given up hope of finding the small space rock.

Researchers say that if it is found, the meteorite could help us understand how our solar system was formed.

Phil McCausland is a meteorite curator at Western University. “Whatever type of meteorite this is we’ll have a context for it in the solar system.”

Dozens of people, walking in straight lines with magnets strapped to the bottom of their poles, stomped through the fields outside St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon. They’re hoping to find some sign of the meteorite which could be as small as a pebble.

“I’ve never found anything in Ontario,” said Patrick Herrmann, who came down from Toronto to help with the search. “I’ve been in other searches that were successful but never here.”

Experts have compared the search to finding a needle in a haystack.
