A Maud Lewis painting, discovered in a New Hamburg thrift store last month, has already set an auction record.
Bidding has topped $125,208, the most for any original work by the Nova Scotia artist.
The original estimate for the painting, titled “Portrait for Eddie Barnes and Ed Murphy, Lobster Fisherman, Bay View, N.S.,” was $16,000.
Volunteers discovered the painting while sifting through donations at the Mennonite Central Committee Thrift Centre.
Bidding continues here until May 19.
Until then the painting can be viewed at Kitchener’s Homer Watson House and Gallery.
