Tuesday marked the start of a new round of traffic trouble near St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener, as Queen’s Boulevard was closed near the emergency entrance to the facility.

City crews will work through the spring and summer and into the fall to replace underground infrastructure and upgrade the above-ground portion of Queen's, working in stages between Belmont Avenue and Rex Drive.

The hospital will remain open as construction takes place, although some detours and other measures will be in place.

Beginning Tuesday, vehicles looking to access the St. Mary’s emergency department will have to enter via what is normally the hospital’s main exit. Signage and security staff will be in place.

Non-emergency traffic will be ushered into a separate entrance, just ahead of the one for the ER, between 5:30 a.m. and 9 p.m.

By next week, the main hospital entrances will be back to normal, but Queen’s Boulevard will be inaccessible from Patricia Avenue.

By late June or early July, work will move a little further down Queen’s.

Work is expected to last until November 1.
