The body of a 60-year-old woman was found in a Brantford lake Thursday afternoon.

Police say they received a call around 4:30 p.m. saying a woman’s body had been found in shallow water near the shore of Mohawk Lake, in the city’s southeast.

The woman was later identified as Brantford resident Darlene Cyrenne.

“She was reported missing just a couple hours before she was found,” said Insp. Scott Easto.

Police say there were no obvious clues as to a cause of death and an autopsy will be performed. The death is tentatively being considered not to be suspicious.

“We have several officers from major crimes investigating it, and the forensic identification section are involved in it,” said Easto.

All entrances to Mohawk Park were blocked by police for much of Thursday night and well into Friday.

Police say they weren’t actively investigating for most of the day, but wanted to preserve the integrity of the scene depending on the outcome of the autopsy.

The sudden closure of the park came as a surprise to many Brantfordites.

“I didn’t know this had happened, but sure (it’s) unsettling,” said Jean Hicks.
