Fire forced residents of a Kitchener apartment building into the street for part of Wednesday evening.

Firefighters were called to the building, at the corner of Fairway and River roads, around 9 p.m.

“We found a fire in one of the units on the second floor,” Kitchener Fire platoon chief Greg Willett told CTV News.

“It started on the stovetop (and) spread to the cupboards.”

The flames were brought under control in about 10 minutes, but the unit received a significant amount of smoke damage.

A man and cat living in the apartment were both able to escape the building without injury.

Buses were brought in to keep the building’s residents warm while firefighters ventilated smoke from the complex.
