A Brantford man is facing a number of charges after allegedly spraying another man in the face with bear spray.

Brantford Police say the altercation began around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday, on Tom Street in the city’s south end.

According to police, a man was approached by a silver car, then asked for a cigarette by one of the people in the car.

When the man said he didn’t have any cigarettes, the car left.

The man and the car crossed paths again a few minutes later, on Webling Street.

This time, somebody in the car allegedly sprayed the man in the face with bear spray, after which the car drove off.

Police were contacted, but were unable to track down the car.

A couple hours later, police say, the man came upon the car once again – this time in Victoria Park in the city’s downtown.

Police again responded, and this time placed the man believed to have sprayed the subtance under arrest.

The 23-year-old man faces charges of assault with a weapon and unauthorized possession of a weapon. Police say he still had the bear spray on him at the time of his arrest.

The man who was sprayed was treated by paramedics at the scene.
