A lockdown at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in south Kitchener has ended, Correctional Service Canada announced Tuesday.
The lockdown began last Thursday afternoon. Multiple sources told CTV News there had been other, briefer lockdowns in the days prior to last Thursday.
While it was in place, the prison’s nearly 200 inmates were unable to access programs and services, and no visitors were allowed inside.
According to the Elizabeth Fry Society advocacy group, the lockdown was enacted as part of a search for drugs or weapons inside the facility.
CSC said that "a number of unauthorized items" were found during their search, but did not specify what those items were.
