Road closures have sent several school buses to a quiet residential street in north Kitchener – and one occupant says he’s worried about the safety of everyone using the road as a result.

“This was never a problem before,” Andy Hook said Tuesday.

“There has to be a solution.”

Hook lives on Walter Street, which normally doesn’t see heavy traffic from school buses or other vehicles.

That’s changed this spring, due to construction on nearby Green Street – the usual home of school buses coming to and from Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School.

While the buses did cause congestion when they were parked on Green, Hook says it’s worse on Walter because it is narrow and has a large curve near where the buses have been stopping.

He’s also concerned that things will only get more congested starting Wednesday, when a section of Victoria Street closes – making Walter and the adjoining Glasgow Street more attractive for drivers looking to get to or from northwest Kitchener.

Tuesday, Hook says, at least seven buses were parked on the street.

A spokesperson for Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region, which looks after school bus routes in the area, says only four buses are using Walter on a daily basis, but a special event at the school necessitated more being brought in for the day.
