A man from the Guelph area has died after a floatplane crashed in the district of Parry Sound.

“About 8:00 this morning, there was a lone pilot, a 77-year-old gentleman from the Guelph area who was landing his float plane on Taylor Lake. Something happened and his plane flipped and as a result the pilot couldn't get out and died inside the aircraft,” says OPP inspector Mark Andrews.

It happened on Taylor Lake in Whitestone, southwest of North Bay. OPP say the plane was a 185 Cessna. People in the area saw it go down and tried to help.

“Unfortuanately there were witnesses around the lake that did see it happen, and people rushed out to the scene as fast as they could to assist, but unfortunately the rescue wasn't successful,” says Andrews.

The name of the victim has not been released but OPP say they believe he was on his way to see family vacationing in the area.

The transportation safety board has been called in to investigate.
