An Uber driver is without his ride after an incident Thursday night.

Waterloo Regional police say around 11:00 p.m., an intoxicated 18-year-old student stole a car from an Uber driver near the corner of King Street and Spring Street in Uptown Waterloo.

The student began driving erratically, southbound through the Uptown area.

Six blocks away, at the corner of Erb Street and Regina Street, the driver crashed into a cement utility pole.  The pole broke and crashed onto the car, bringing power lines down.  The car was a total write-off.

The 18-year-old was taken to Grand River hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the student faces a number of charges including robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, impaired and dangerous driving.

The Uber driver was un-harmed.
