Three teens have been charged with an assault at a Kitchener high school.
A staff member from Huron Heights Secondary School called the Waterloo Regional Police Service around 10:50 p.m. Monday to report that a student had been assaulted inside the school.
Police said in a press release that the 17-year-old victim had minor injuries but was taken to a local hospital by paramedics.
Two 17-year-old girls and one 16-year-old girl have been charged with assault causing bodily harm.
A spokesperson for the Waterloo Region District School Board said in an email they "cannot participate in an interview about a specific incident that involved minors and a police investigation."
CTV News received a video that appeared to show the incident and has decided not to broadcast it at this time.
Police have called the assault a targeted incident.
"A physical altercation, depending on the circumstances particular to each individual incident, can sometimes be considered consensual and not criminal in nature," their statement read. "In this instance, that was not the case and as a result of the investigation, officers arrested and charged the three youths with assault causing bodily harm."
Several students told CTV News the video started circulating on social media Monday.
"The school should be a safe place for everybody and everyone should feel safe to be in the hallways and the school building itself," said Grade 12 student Zahra Zeineddne. "It's sad that people had to endure that."
"It's the worst thing I've ever seen here, [and I] hope everyone is OK," said Halle Mitchell, another Grade 12 student. "I just think it was really disappointing. I don't think it really represents our school as a whole. Seeing that doesn't represent us as a community, as Grade 12 [students], and how we've grown to be this year."
"I think it's really disappointing that kids from our school could actually be capable of something like that, especially this close to the end of the year when we should all be happy and getting along," said Grade 12 student Taylor Thorne.
The three girls who were charged are scheduled to appear in court on August 5.
Anyone with information on the assault is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
