A public policy think tank is calling on Ontario to provide more school choice for Ontario families.
The Fraser Institute has released a study saying choice outside the public school system in Ontario is largely limited to the Catholic or French systems -- and alternative choices are limited and depend on where you live.
The study argues that choice could be expanded in the public school system if the Ontario government encouraged school boards to establish a wide range of alternative schools based on parent and community needs -- in areas such as art, music and hockey.
The institute is also calling on Ontario to adopt an open enrolment policy allowing students to attend any public school as long as space is available -- which it says would largely eliminate school assignment by postal code as British Columbia and Manitoba have already done.
