A fire that tore through two Guelph homes on Saturday is now under investigation by the property crimes unit.

The fire is believed to have started in the carport of one of the homes.

Saadoon Maged was at home when the fire started, and he says the smoke was so thick he couldn't see anything as he tried to escape.

He yelled at a second floor tenant to get out before he says he had to feel his way to safety. There was no one inside the second house.

Guelph Police Sgt. Doug Pflug says that "as a result of our investigation we've deemed [the fire] suspicious" and the property crimes unit is now investigating.

There is no official damage estimate yet, but Maged believes it could be over $500,000 based on the value of the house.

Meanwhile he has no home and no belongings to speak of, but is thankful though that nobody was hurt or killed in the blaze.
