GrandLinq has officially been accepted as regional council’s preferred choice to design, build and operate the Ion light rail transit system.

The consortium’s $593-million bid was selected by a Region of Waterloo working group as the preferred choice.

Council’s planning and works committee approved the choice earlier this month; council ratified that decision Wednesday night.

Councillors also voted 13-2 to defeat an "area rating" motion by Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig.

He wanted to amend the amount Cambridge was contributing to phase one of the project.
