Police, coroner investigating two deaths at Brantford, Ont. encampment

An investigation is underway into the deaths of two people at an encampment in Brantford, Ont.

Brantford Police were called to the area of Eagle Place at around 5:18 p.m. Thursday following a report of two people found dead in the vicinity.

Currently, investigators don’t believe foul play was involved.

Police said they are working with the Office of the Chief Coroner to gather more information about the deaths.

Police are advising the community to prioritize safe drug use and to reach out to local substance use services for support.

Mayor offers condolences

Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis extended his condolences to those impacted by the pair of deaths.

“My heart goes out to our fellow community members’ families and loved ones at this very difficult time,” said Davis, in a media release. “Sadly, although the City’s exceptionally dedicated Homelessness Response Team works tirelessly to help individuals in encampments find alternate shelter, we may not always be aware of every encampment in the city.”

Davis stated that the city has an encampment response team made up of trained outreach workers, supported by police and emergency services. According to the city, once an encampment is known, the response team works closely with the people living in the encampments to help connect with resources and safe shelters.
