An opposition MPP is upset about spending at the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network (WWLHIN).

The issue relates to a bill for a university-level management course taken by WWLHIN chair Kathy Durst.

Progressive Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod raised concerns about money being used for a Liberal appointee to take a course, saying it should be spent on front-line health care.

Speaking from the legislature, she said "The premier's priority is to make Ontario patients pay $10,000 for Kathy Durst, the chair of the Waterloo Wellington LHIN to take management courses at McMaster."

MacLeod also takes exception to other aspects of the operation of the LHIN and other billings filed by Durst.

Durst says the approval for the course came in 2007 and it has been budgeted accordingly.

"The chair has oversight and judiciary obligation for a nearly $1 billion health care budget in this LHIN," she says, "proper oversight, learning about all the facets of governance was important for this board, so this board approved that I attend this course."

She also says she's sharing her lessons with other WWLHIN board members.

The auditor general will deliver a report on consulting practices at hospitals and Local Health Integration Networks on Wednesday.
