Firefighters say they encountered heavy smoke Monday morning when they arrived at the site of a basement fire.

It’s believed lightning sparked the fire, at 121 York Road, around 3:30 a.m.

Firefighters from four stations were called to the house.

Upon arrival, they say they found thick smoke and nil visibility conditions inside the home.

No people were present inside the building, but a cat needed rescue and was removed from the building.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control and eventually extinguish it.

Fire officials say an exact damage estimate is not available.
