Michael Ball received calls from Erin Howlett and a man expected to testify next week at Ball’s trial, jurors heard Monday.

Ball, 24, is on trial for first-degree murder in connection with the death of Howlett. He has pleaded not guilty.

He is accused of killing Howlett, stuffing her remains into a duffel bag and leaving the bag in the Grand River in Kitchener.

Court has heard that Ball and Howlett were in the midst of a breakup.

Monday’s testimony centred around the phone records of Ball’s cellphone, which were explained by a Bell employee. CTV is owned by Bell, through its Bell Media arm.

The employee walked the trial through Ball’s cellphone records from June 27, 2013 – the last day Howlett was seen alive.

Jurors heard that Howlett made two calls to Ball’s phone on that day.

The first, which occurred at 2 p.m., lasted for 58 seconds. At 4:30 p.m., Howlett called back and the conversation lasted 88 seconds.

The trial has previously heard that Howlett was dropped off at Ball’s apartment later that day.

Also outlined were text message exchanges between Ball and another man, who claims he helped Ball dispose of Howlett’s body.

That man is expected to take the stand next week. A court order prevents publication of his name.

While some data about the messages was explained in court, the Bell employee testified that the contents of the messages were not retrievable.
