Two seniors are now temporarily homeless after a fire broke out late Saturday afternoon.

“We did find significant fire within the structure itself that had already self-ventilated. Crews were able to make a fast attack on the rear of the house and were able to somewhat bring the fire under control until we were able to set up a water shuttle program,” says John Osborne, Fire Chief of Guelph-Eramosa.

Thirty fire fighters from four stations had to bring in the water shuttle as the home is in a remote area on fourth line, halfway between Rockwood and Fergus.

Two people live in the home. One of the residents was able to get out safely while the other was out shopping when the fire broke out.

Crews resuscitated a dog and five cats – all animals are recovering at the vet.

Damage is estimated at $400,000 – although it’s not clear how the fire started. The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified.
