Sections of the Nith and Conestogo rivers could flood as more rainfall mixes with melting snow, the Grand River Conservation Authority is warning.
Flood warnings were issued Monday morning for areas along the Nith River in New Hamburg and Ayr, and along the Conestogo River in St. Jacobs.
By early afternoon, the alert along the Nith had been raised to a Level 2 warning.
Water levels in New Hamburg are expected to peak early Tuesday morning, with the same levels being reached in Ayr late that afternoon.
“We are still seeing a lot of rain coming through, so we are going to be re-evaluating as the day goes on,” GRCA spokesperson Dave Schultz told CTV News.
Residents are being asked not to park vehicles in low-lying areas normally hit by flooding.
In St. Jacobs, the low-level bridge upstream of the village has been closed.
The GRCA recommends that parents keep children and pets away from waterways, where banks may be slippery.
Water levels are expected to rise across the watershed this week, although the GRCA expects most rivers to stay within their banks.
In Kitchener, city crews responded to nearly 50 separate incidents of localized flooding as rain pounded the city Monday.
Leaves were fingered as the main culprit – blocking catch basins and making it difficult for water to drain.
