Smoke was visible from several kilometres away Wednesday evening when a grass fire broke out along the side of Highway 401.
The fire was reported around 6 p.m., behind the Rona hardware store near Pinebush and Hespeler roads.
Firefighters say the fire was quickly brought under control and did not spread to the store.
Waterloo Regional Police are investigating the fire in an effort to determine its cause.
While the cause has not been determined, firefighters say dry, breezy weather like that seen Wednesday evening does increase the risk of fire.
