Sorry, Baden.
Better luck next time, Stratford.
Kitchener has been selected as the future host of a layover facility for GO Transit buses and trains.
“Building a layover in Kitchener means more reliable service for the community,” Metrolinx spokesperson Malon Edwards told CTV News in an email.
The facility, which was promised in the run-up to the 2014 provincial election, will be built at the former Clarke Transport site at 200 Shirley Avenue.
It will be able to house and maintain up to 30 buses and four trains.
City officials hope the new facility will help speed the process of bringing more GO train service to Waterloo Region.
“We’re hopeful that very quickly, the province will ensure that some of those additional trains are ones that actually start in Toronto in the morning and work their way here,” said Mayor Berry Vrbanovic.
It’s estimated that 34 per cent of the region’s 30,000 tech workers commute from Toronto, while 32,000 people leave Waterloo Region and the Guelph area every day for work in Toronto.
The new layover facility is currently in the design phase.
Construction is expected to start in late 2015 and last for approximately one year.
