Dozens of animals have died after a fire at a barn in Mapleton.

Mapleton Fire was called to the 14th Line and Sideroad 17 area at 8:59 a.m. Sunday.

When crews arrived, a large fire was already consuming the building that housed around 110 cows.

In an email to CTV News on Monday, Deputy Fire Chief Callise Loos said 70 cows were rescued, but 40 died in the fire.

Wellington North Fire and Minto Fire provided firefighters and tanker support.

No firefighters or people were hurt.

Loos said the flames began in the second story of the barn but the cause is still unknown. The fire is being treated as not suspicious.

She said the damage is set at over one million dollars.
