It’s been nearly 90 years since the first Budds clothing store opened, in Kitchener.
It’s been more than 80 years since it moved into a building on King Street in downtown Kitchener, where it would become a pillar of the city’s retail landscape.
And all those decades of history are about to come to an end.
“We worked six days a week – long hours each day – for close to 50 years,” Stan Budd said Thursday in an interview.
Four brothers were behind Budds when it first opened.
Over time, the reins were passed down to the next generation – Stan and his brother Harry – and the store expanded to Guelph and Simcoe.
All three Budds locations are expected to close early in 2016.
“We’re looking forward to the time with our family,” Stan Budd said.
The brothers say they’re in talks with a national retailer to take over the Kitchener storefront.
