A crash outside Cambridge has claimed the life of an 82-year-old man and sent a truck driver to hospital.

The crash occurred around 2 p.m. Wednesday at Old Beverly and Village roads, east of the city in North Dumfries Township.

Waterloo Regional Police say the elderly man was driving a Mazda 3 westbound on Old Beverly when it came upon an eastbound tractor-trailer.

“The Mazda appears to have crossed the centre line and into the path of the tractor-trailer,” Acting Staff Sgt. Fred Gregory told reporters at the scene.

Police declined to release the name of the 82-year-old Wednesday afternoon, as next of kin had yet to be notified, but say the 82-year-old may have suffered a medical episode in the moments before the crash.

“We’re still determining that,” said Gregory.

The truck driver’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Both vehicles ended up in ditches along the road, with the tractor-trailer perched awkwardly off the road for several hours.

Old Beverly Road was expected to remain closed between Village Road and County Road 97 until sometime Wednesday evening as police investigated the crash.
