Over the next week, tens of thousands of brown trout will be released into the Grand and Conestogo rivers.

The Conestogo will see 14,750 trout added to its waters on Wednesday and Thursday, while the Grand will get 23,000 fish on Friday and Monday.

It’s the work of the Friends of the Grand River, a volunteer group which has been helping to stock local waterways for years, as well as the Grand River Conservation Authority and other groups.

In the Conestogo River, trout will be released at 30 sites along a 19-kilometre route between the Conestogo Lake dam and Hawkesville.

The fish destined for the Grand River will be released at various sites in the 28 kilometres between the Shand Dam and West Montrose.

This year’s brown trout fishing season began April 22 and continues until Sept. 30.
