Lifejackets were a key reason three paddlers were able to get to safety after their canoe overturned Tuesday night, authorities say.

According to Saugeen Shores Police, the trio were canoeing the Saugeen River, having set out from the access point at Bruce Road 3 around 8 p.m.

They were headed for Denny’s Dam, a conservation authority just outside Southampton.

At some point on the journey, the canoe tipped – sending its three occupants and their belongings into the water.

The occupants were able to get to a nearby island and call 911, and were found shortly after 10 p.m.

None of them received significant injuries.
