The roof of a Puslinch Township barn used for boarding horses collapsed overnight.

Amina Syed, who owns the barn on Ellis Street just east of Cambridge, says her and her husband were getting ready for the day Friday when they noticed the collapse.

“We just looked out, and there it was,” she says.

It’s not clear what caused the collapse, although people who board their houses in the barn say there was a noticeable amount of wet snow on the roof over the last few days.

“We’re having lots of bad weather – snow and all that,” says Syed.

All the horses appeared to be OK, with no apparent injuries.

Cathy Braid, who boards horses at the facility, says the top priority now is to make sure the animals can’t hurt themselves on the wreckage of the roof.

“They’re curious animals. They tend to want to investigate, so we want to make sure that we get this all cleared up so they don’t hurt themselves,” she says.

“We just have to ensure that our horses are kept safe … and take it one day at a time.”

Syed says her thoughts are with the horses and making arrangements for them to the boarders’ satisfaction before considering a rebuild.
