Paul Morelli is frustrated.
He’s one of a group of construction workers claiming they’ve been unfairly treated by City of Waterloo bylaw enforcement officers.
The group’s main concern is that they’re being repeatedly handed parking tickets while working on a project in the Hickory Street area.
“We’re parking here for work, and every three hours we have to come down and move our vehicles around,” he says.
Waterloo’s bylaws state that cars parked on-street in the area can only stay for three hours.
The workers say they try and adhere to that, but don’t always make it down in time.
Morelli says he received $85 worth of tickets last week alone – even though he says sees little traffic that isn’t construction-related.
“It’s all construction here. There’s nobody else around,” he says.
The city does offer construction workers a pass to exempt them from some parking requirements.
At a cost of $5 per day of $50 per month, Morelli says it’s still more than he wants to pay.
“If they want to avoid getting ticketed, then they should participate in the program that we have available for them,” Roslyn Lusk, Waterloo’s director of transportation services, tells CTV News.
