Stratford hockey coach resigns, facing assault charge, after incident at Elora arena

A hockey coach for the Ontario Super Hockey League (OSHL) has resigned and is facing an assault charged after an incident at the Elora Community Centre.

In a statement posted to social media, OSHL Director Bill Ryan wrote: “We are aware of an incident that occurred [Friday] night in Elora involving OSHL Director and Stratford Head Coach and GM Jamie Petrie. As of 3pm [Saturday], we have accepted Jamie’s resignation. The OSHL is committed to providing a safe environment for all of its players, staff, and fans. We will continue to implement this moving forward.”

The Stratford Fighting Irish faced off with Elora Rocks on Friday night.

In a statement published on social media, the Elora Rocks team confirmed an ‘incident’ occurred after the game involving President Rich Wigmore.

“First and foremost, we’re relieved to share that Rich is okay. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the fans, players and volunteers who stepped up to help de-escalate the situation. Your quick thinking and support made all the difference. We also want to acknowledge the league’s swift and appropriate handling of the matter. It’s reassuring to know they prioritize the safety of players, staff, and everyone involved in the game.”

“To our fans, we sincerely apologize for what took place. We do not condone violence in any form and deeply regret that our valued community — young and old — had to witness such an incident. Thank you for your understanding as we move forward together,” the statement read.

Although it is not clear what sparked the fight, Ontario Provincial Police said emergency services were called to a community centre in Elora on Friday around 11 p.m.

Police charged a 54-year-old man with assault.

In an email to CTV News, the Stratford Fighting said, "The Stratford Fighting Irish and more specifically Jamie Petrie are sorry for the uncertainty and concern the events of the past week have caused. As an organization we will continue to provide excellent hockey and a great environment at the Allman for our games. To our fans, please continue to be a part of our Irish Family. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Arena this Saturday. To our valued partners, we beyond appreciate the outpouring of support in the last 72 hours."

In the social media post, OSHL Director Ryan said, “As this is an occurrence… under active police investigation there will be no further comment at this time.”

The Ontario Super Hockey League was launched in the fall of 2021 and features players over the age of 20. It was founded by both Petrie and Ryan.
