A bizarre incident north of Erin, Ont. ended with a woman being taken to hospital with serious injuries and a man facing numerous charges.

Wellington County OPP responded to a 911 call from a home on Side Road 27 around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday.

OPP Const. Cheri Rockefeller says “The female party had been stabbed and…the house was on fire, police arrived and found the female on top of the roof.”

Once on scene police, fire and EMS helped the woman down from the roof of the home, which was filled with smoke.

The woman was transported to hospital in Orangeville before being transferred to Toronto with serious but non-life threatening injures.

The man in the home was quickly taken into custody.

Forensic officers and investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office were at the scene on Monday to collect evidence.

Gersham White, 78, of Erin Township has been charged with attempted murder, arson with disregard for human life and failing to comply with bail conditions.

White made a court appearance by audio link on Monday from Guelph General Hospital where he is apparently being treated for minor injuries.

He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to court on Friday.
