The provincial government has announced it will add 766 licensed child care spaces to schools around the province.
Earlier this year the government announced $120 million in funding over three years to create approximately 4,000 new child care spaces. The first round of funding has been allocated to 13 schools, including ones in Kitchener and Elmira.
“Our government is proud to invest in families by supporting a modernized child care and early years system with more capacity to care for our youngest learners. Adding nearly 800 child care spaces in local schools is an important step toward improving access to high quality, licensed child care for all families,” said Education Minister Liz Sandals.
The government says by having child care in local schools, it makes it easier for children to move into kindergarten by being at the same location. The new spaces are being built in areas where there is significant demand for child care.
Brigadoon-Huron Catholic Elementary School in Kitchener will be adding five rooms that can accommodate 88 children. Riverside Public School in Elmira will also add five rooms and 88 spots.
The programs should be open for September 2016.
