Kitchener residents are now legally allowed to keep chickens in their backyards.
It took more than a year to finalize the bylaw, with council approving the decision at a meeting on Monday night.
More than 1,800 people responded to an online survey the city conducted earlier this year and 87 per cent of respondents were on board with the idea.
The issue was also debated for hours at a committee meeting earlier in November.
The city has set some rules for those wanting to raise chickens in their yards.
Owners can only have up to four chickens and they must be registered with the city.
All chicken coops will be inspected by bylaw officers.
Any eggs laid in backyard coops cannot be sold to the public, and no roosters will be allowed in the city.
If anyone had more than four chickens on November 8 they will be allowed to keep up to six of them for the remainder of the chicken’s lives.
