Const. Matthew Drenters, an eight-year member of the Guelph Police Service, was sentenced Monday for his role in helping a fellow officer procure steroids.
Drenters was convicted of neglect of duty and discreditable conduct in July over the incident, in which Drenters received anabolic steroids on behalf of Const. Chris Panylo and transferred them to Panylo inside a police building while both were on duty.
As a result, he will be fined the equivalent of 20 days’ pay and be forced to perform 40 hours of community service.
Defence lawyer Joseph Markson says he considers the community service a key part of the sentence.
“That’s something he does naturally, but I think it’s very important,” he says.
Insp. Howard McGarr says Drenters will still have to live with his actions.
“He certainly has a bumpy road ahead of him,” he tells CTV News.
“He has to re-establish his credibility within the community, within the police service and within the judicial process.”
Panylo has already pleaded guilty to five Police Services Act charges, although most involve an unrelated case in which he stole drugs meant to be used as evidence.
McGarr declined to comment on if Drenters could face criminal charges, citing the links between his situation and Panylo’s ongoing case.
