One person has died from influenza in Waterloo Region so far this fall, public health officials say.
Authorities with Region of Waterloo Public Health say the victim was a person older than 65 with underlying health conditions.
Nine local cases of the flu have required hospitalization, while a total of 12 cases have been confirmed through lab testing.
This year’s main circulating strain of influenza is H3N2, which generally indicates more severe cases than are seen in an average flu season.
Seniors and young children are particularly susceptible to H3N2 viruses.
Health officials say the best way to protect oneself against the flu is to get a vaccination.
Other recommended precautions include covering mouths and noses when sneezing or coughing, frequently cleaning commonly touched surfaces, and staying home if fl symptoms present themselves.
