The grandstand at Kitchener's Centennial Stadium will be demolished. Kitchener city councilors voted in favour of the decision at Monday night's council meeting.

The stadium was built in 1967 but was shut down last year due to safety concerns. Over the past 45 years, the stadium has hosted numerous events including concerts, exhibitions and high school sports. In recent years, it was the go-to venue for high school track and field and football championships.

The cost to repair the aging facility was estimated at over $1 million. Despite the pending demolition of the grandstand, the stadium will still see various forms of sporting action.

"Currently, the field is useable and the track still needs some attention so we're trying to work with the outside community groups and the citizens to find out what the next step should be around the amenities that are included at Centennial Stadium", says Director of Enterprise for the City of Kitchener, Kim Kugler.

The city will likely be soliciting partnerships in the coming months.

The timeline for the demolition still needs to be set. Funding for the project will be part of the 2013 budget and is estimated at $250,000.

The vote passed by a 6-5 margin.
