An outbreak of C. difficile has been declared at St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener after six patients were found to have the bacteria.

Hospital officials said Friday that three of the patients had been infected before they were admitted to St. Mary’s, while the other three picked the bacteria up while in hospital.

The patients are spread over four units – inpatient cardiac and general surgery, cardiology, the chest unit and the medical-surgical intensive care unit.

All affected patients have been isolated and are receiving dedicated nursing care, hospital officials said in a press release.

No visitor restrictions have been enacted.

The last C. difficile outbreak at St. Mary’s occurred in 2012.
